What is Pilates

An exercise technique, movement education system and so much more…………

Pilates targets the body’s deep postural muscles improving postural stability by reawakening, lengthening and strengthening muscles without creating bulk, thus restoring a more youthful mobility to your body. One of the fundamental aims of Pilates is to restore the natural curves of the spine allowing us to move as nature intended; effeciently, freely and free from pain.

Stability and strength grow gradually from the core to the periphery of the body, mobility of the joints improves and this helps people manage the muscular strain that goes with poor posture and the pain and movement restrictions caused by injuries or conditions such as arthritis.

Due to the huge variety of exercises, which are designed to be carried out with precision and control, it can be whatever you want it to be – it can offer the most intensely challenging whole body workout, body sculpting and postural change, rest and relaxation, rehabilitation after injury or surgery, mobilisation and relief from pain or release of muscular tension.

I believe its effectiveness lies in the integration of the movements with the breath, combined with the holistic whole body approach which sets it apart from many other forms of exercise.
